A future without youth homelessness

Policy Position Paper - Juvenile Justice and Youth Homelessness

This draft policy paper looks at why homelessness is a key risk factor in entering the Juvenile Justice system, the significant impact it has on a young person’s ability to access bail and its contribution to the increasing number of children and young people on remand in Juvenile Justice centres.

Summary

The increasing number of children and young people on remand in NSW’s Juvenile Justice Centres is one of the main issues facing the juvenile justice system. This paper looks at the three immediate issues contributing to the increasing number of children and young people on remand, as well as the change in focus of the young offenders act and the policy of justice reinvestment.
